We are Kathryn Benjamin, founder of Big Island Yoga Therapy (BIYT) and Certified Yoga Therapist (E-RYT 500, C-IAYT 1000) and Rebecca Rubenstein, BIYT Intern (RYT 200). We are reaching out to let you know about an opportunity to support our newest 10-week Summer Series: Yoga for Anxiety and Depression (Hilo). Weekly classes are set to run for June and July, exact dates/times TBA.
We greatly appreciate the work you have done in our community as a mental health professional. We see the Yoga for Anxiety and Depression series as a complementary program to the traditional talk-therapy you already provide. As you may know, recent studies have shown that yoga and other body-based healing modalities can help access and release trauma stored in the body. We also know the profound impact developing a community can have on personal healing. In addition to specific training in Trauma Sensitivity, yoga therapy and modifications, Kathryn Benjamin brings over 15 years of experience in the mental health field to this program. Both she and Rebecca have been using yoga tools to help manage the symptoms of anxiety and depression for many years, which is in part, why we are so passionate about serving our community in this way.
The reality is holistic care is often out of financial reach for many in our community. Yoga is often viewed and experienced as something that is, “Not for me,” because of cost, westernized ‘yoga fashion’, or seeing yoga as something for mainly white/thin/healthy/happy/cis/able-bodied women. We believe everyone deserves a variety of tools to support with mental health. Accessibility, service, and inclusiveness are three of the main tenets of BIYT’s approach to yoga, which is why all BIYT sessions are offered by donation and on a sliding scale. However, to make this model sustainable for our teachers, and to expand course offerings, we need the financial support of those in our community who are able to do so. Our goal for one series of Yoga for Anxiety and Depression is to raise $1,150 by May 12th, 2018.

Information to provide your referrals:
We encourage participants to give a financial contribution, to their ability, because we know this can help engender a sense of commitment. These donations will be collected anonymouslyat the beginning of the 10-week course. However, absolutely no one will be turned away due to financial need. All participants will be met where they are with compassion and care - no yoga experience is necessary. Participants are also welcome to attend for free.

If you or clients would like to meet the team at BIYT, public drop-in Therapeutic classes are currently on Thursdays 5:30-7pm at Aloha Wellness Center (239 Haili Street, Hilo). These sessions are offered by suggested donation of $10-15, with no one turned away.
Big Island Yoga Therapy provides a safe environment, experienced yoga therapists and teachers, and trauma-sensitive teaching practices. BIYT is committed to providing decolonized, accessible, therapeutic yoga in an inclusive environment in our community.
