Yoga for Mental Health

A trauma-sensitive approach to yoga

This workshop provides a unique opportunity to learn about the benefits of yoga in the mental health setting, as well as looking at how we can be sensitive to mental health in our yoga settings. In recognizing that integrative approaches to Mental Health are the most successful way of helping individuals, we can begin to incorporate how yoga fits into the puzzle.

This workshop can be formatted in many ways to include sharing these practices with mental health professionals, guiding existing yoga teachers in creating trauma-safe environments for students who are knowingly or unknowingly struggling with mental health issues, as well as including students who identify with these issues themselves. Each workshop opportunity can be catered to all three of these audiences, or can be case specific.

Katy has been teaching yoga in a residential mental health setting for over 3 years, as well as teaching mental health focused public classes in Hilo, HI. Her work in Yoga for Mental Health was also featured at the 2014 Hawaii Yoga Festival and other specific trainings for mental health employees  and yoga teacher trainings on the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Alignment Reset

Understanding how our Hips & Jaw come to be Unleveled, and How to Bring them Back into Alignment

Most of us we are walking around with one hip higher than the other all day, creating chronic imbalances in our muscles and in our yoga postures. These imbalances can lead to pain, injury and diminished awareness of our bodies. In this 3-hour workshop we will explore Triplets Theory from the work of Dr. Steve Swidler, and identify if misalignments are caused from our hips or from our Jaw! It is hard to believe, but for many of us, correcting how we hold our jaw can be the missing link in our chronic back pain, migraines, and even knee pain! Once identified, you will learn techniques to level the pelvis each morning, and prior to your yoga practices.

Workshop will conclude with a 30 minute Yoga Nidra Practice for central nervous system integration. Yoga Nidra is a systematic relaxation that utilizes a personal intent for maximum healing at the conscious, subconscious and unconscious level. All Levels Welcome.

Creating Sankalpa

Setting Intent: Severance, Threshold and Incorporation

In this  workshop we will examine who we are & what we want in our current phase of life.  We will learn how to be a witness to others as they unlock their intent for living. Using journalling, meditation, and story-telling, we will begin to see the things we want to removed from our life, so that our purest state can shine through. Upon leaving the workshop you will receive a 30-day curriculum of journal entries and personal ceremony that will guide you through the Threshold phase. Threshold is a vital incubation part of the process where you reflect upon why and how you are severing from things that do not serve you. You will leave with a first draft of you Intent Statement that may be revised during your 30 days and will be an integral part of walking your new path.

This workshop is appropriate for any person, in any phase of life. All that is needed is an open mind, a desire to examine yourself and a blank journal. It is best offered in a 3-4 hour session, or several 2 hour sessions over a weekend. It is a perfect addition to longer retreats.

Katy has a background in facilitating Rite of Passage experiences with youth in residential treatment. In addition to her own Vision Fast with Darcy Ottey and Chris Quiseng, Katy has been leading Rite of Passage models with adults in her community. As a yoga teacher, she is able to weave together how the classical Rite of Passage journey fits into our yogic path.

Letting Go of Pain

Linking and Releasing Physical & Emotional Pain

In this modern world we are often sent to one specialist for our physical pain, and another specialist for our emotional pain. Rarely are those two specialists discussing the relationship of the two. This workshop is created to help the individual understand the way that their physical pain and emotional pain are deeply related, and give exercises to help resolve both. We will examine concrete ways of modifying postures for specific physical pain (back, neck, wrists, joints, skin, chronic illness, etc) as well as delving into postures that help to alleviate specific kinds of emotional pain (grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, coping with chronic illness, etc).  Each participant will be encouraged to discover what works and doesn't work for them in the pursuit of both home practice, and for modifying in their existing yoga classes. Students will be supported on every level, and will have the opportunity to share their experience, or keep it confidential.

In 2006, Katy had a traumatic spinal surgery to correct her scoliosis and kyphosis. This painful  experience was exacerbated by debilitating depression. For years she worked at treating each kind of pain separately until understanding the deep link between the two. Her extreme spinal fusion and life-long battle with depression has led to a passion for understanding physical modifications for classical yoga postures, as well as in-depth study of yoga for mental health, chronic illness, and recovery from surgery.

The Birth Partner

Prenatal Yoga for the Expecting Mother & Her Partner

This workshop will help you and your partner prepare for labor and delivery whether you are brand new to yoga or have an established practice. By learning specific positions, exercises, breathing & relaxation techniques for both the expecting mom and supportive partner, you will walk away with in-body knowledge to help facilitate an empowered and supported birth. Birthing Partners come in many forms, expecting fathers, sister, doulas, best friends and more. All partners are encouraged, as well as aspiring and certified birth professionals wanting to expand their knowledge base. If you know you will have additional support in labor, feel free to add a third wheel to your birth team for this workshop and learn how to work together to support mama and baby in this precious time.

Katy has a passion for helping others to feel empowered in their own bodies. Her deep background in physical and emotional awareness is key in her work with both her yoga students and her doula clients. As a practicing doula, Katy helps link the spiritual practices of yoga and birth with the practical knowledge of support positions and mechanics of birth. All are welcome, and no previous yoga experience is necessary to walk away with clear techniques and empowerment.

Radical Compassion

Learning tools to move through trauma

In these challenging times, it can be easy to slip into despair or worse, apathy. In this workshop, we will explore the way trauma has manifested in our different energy centers as well as different parts of the body,  and then move through concrete tools to help ease the burden of these feelings. We will utilize breathing, somatic movement, visualization and guided mediation. This workshop creates a safe environment to explore feelings in a safe way, while learning how to begin living with radical compassion towards yourself and others.
