Each participant of Sankalpa Retreats will receive a 1 hour personal yoga therapy session with Katy Benjamin, E-RYT. Trained in the Integrative Yoga Therapy model, Katy will take special care to learn about who you are physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically to help you create a home practice that will honor your personal Sankalpa. As a Rite of Passage facilitator, Katy brings a grounding but expansive perspective to your formation of personal intent. In your personal yoga therapy session you can expect:

  • therapeutic asana
  • injury awareness/healing
  • mantra & affirmation
  • mudra and other gestures
  • deep relaxation
  • suggestions for future work

Rite of Passage Element

Sankalpa is the sanskrit word for "intent" or "resolve". One thing that sets Sankalpa Yoga Retreats apart is that we focus on more than just the asana, helping you to concretely take your yoga practice off the mat and into your daily life. The elements of a Rite of Passage are Severence, Threshold and Incorporation. Throughout the retreat, you will learn how these phases relate to your time on retreat, as well as the rest of your life. We encourage our participants to join us to mark the beginning/end of a phase of life,  and to step back into their lives with new intent and meaning. Activities may include:

  • Journal Enteries
  • Council Sharing
  • Severance Ceremony
  • Mindful walking
  • Optional Day of Silence
  • Optional day of Fasting
  • Closing Ceremony

With all of that in mind, Sankalpa Retreats knows how important unscheduled time is!  Each day will have a clear recommended class, allowing you to honor your personal needs for the rest of the day. Nibezun, a secluded forested property, is an optimal location for unearthing your Sankalpa (intent), and part of that is chosing how you spend your time. The following amenities for spending free time:

  • Penobscot River banks and woods to explore
  • Walking trails
  • Access to Bath Tubs (for all guests)
  • Access to Yoga Room in between most sessions
  • Laundry available at main house and near cabins

Additional Workshops

Throughout the week there will be additional workshops on Health and Wellness. These are optional and will take place in the early afternoon. Workshops are subject to change but may include:

  • Learning to make your own Probiotic Foods: Chef Jasmine, a master food preserver, will walk you through the step by step process of making your own live-cultured sauerkraut and other probiotic-rich foods. Learn the medicinal qualities of these foods and how to incorporate them into your daily life in a practical and realistic way.
  • Learning your Ayurvedic Dosha: Ever wondered why some foods, climates, styles of exercise seem ideal to others and not to you? Ayurveda is the ancient medicine of the yogis. Learning to identify your Dosha can be a game-changer in how you eat, sleep and live. This workshop will help you identify your dominant Dosha and leave you with ideas for how to nourish yourself for maximum outcomes.
